Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a Protestant Church?
Yes. We share common roots with the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church dating back to 1634. In the early 1800’s, many New England churches became divided over theological differences. One group insisted that God is “One” (the Unitarians); the other group insisted that God is “Three in One” (the Trinitarians). As a result of this debate, in 1825 the Trinitarian group in Scituate decided to move down the street. Wanting no confusion, our forbears named their church, “The First Trinitarian Congregational Church.” The sanctuary they finished in 1826 is the place we call home today.

When the United Church of Christ was formed in the 1950’s, our congregation joined that denomination. You can learn about the UCC (United Church of Christ) by going to their website: www.ucc.org

Can I sing in the Choir?
Yes, indeed. Music plays a central part in our church’s life. Our all-volunteer choir rehearses at 7:30 most Thursday evenings and we don’t have tryouts. Bill Richter, the Scituate High School Chorus Director, is our Director of Music and Vickie Schlosser is our organist/pianist. We also have a volunteer chime choir. How lucky are we?!

What do you call the Pastor?
Most people simply call him “Mike,” but word has it that he answers to most anything—Pastor, Father, Sir, Reverend, or whatever you want!

I used to belong to a different Church…is it OK for me to be here?
Yes—ALL ARE WELCOME HERE regardless of your religious background, or lack thereof.

What is the focus of the worship service?
Our worship is centered on “the Word”— referring to both the reading of the Bible and the sermon (which makes a connection between the “then” of the Bible and the “now” we live in). Music and Prayer form the second and third components of our worship. Lasting about an hour, our worship services involve a lot of congregational participation.

Can I take Communion?
As long as you seek to be a follower of Christ, you are welcome to enjoy the sacrament with us. We normally have communion on the first Sunday of each month.

What about Baptisms?
Baptisms happen during the regular Sunday worship service. If you are interested in being baptized (or having your child baptized), please contact the Pastor to see what is involved.

How do I join the Church?
Two or three times a year we offer a seminar for anyone who wants to explore becoming a member or simply to learn more about the church. Call the office and we’ll make sure you get invited!

When Should I Contact the Pastor?
The Pastor can be reached by phoning the church (781) 545-5300, or by sending an email to ftccScituate@ftcc.comcastbiz.net. You might want to contact the Pastor if:

    You are in the hospital;
    You have a baby;
    Someone in the family is ill or has died;
    You are less than pleased about a sermon;
    You want to know more about the church;
    You want to get married;
    You’re not sure what you think about God;
    You find yourself struggling with life;
    You just want to talk to someone.

Is your church involved in Mission?
We set aside 10% of our income for Mission outside the congregation. Our Mission and Outreach Ministry Team is one of the most active in the church. We support and are involved with many, many organizations including:

    Amaryllis Foundation
    Andover-Newton Theological School
    Mainspring House
    Carolina Hill
    DOVE (Domestic Violence Ended)
    Interfaith Social Services
    Scituate Food Pantry

    If you want to know more….just ask!
