We invite all children aged 2-14 to join us for church school during the Sunday worship service.
Our vibrant church school is a cornerstone of our Christian ministry. Each child and young adult is exposed to a Christian learning environment guided by dedicated teachers who work in teams exploring a central curriculum. This year’s curriculum follows the lectionary called Seasons of the Spirit and it can be found at www.seasonsonline.ca
This church school year we will be working closely with Rev. Mike Dunfee so that in many cases the church school curriculum parallels the topic of his sermon. Consequently, family members will be able to know what each has heard and will be better able to discuss the content of the church school lesson and the sermons together.
Missions are a key part of the learning experience. Each class selects a mission that they will support. The classes promote their missions during six different coffee hours that are hosted by various classes. The following missions were supported last year:
- Pre K brought food to the Scituate Animal Shelter
- Kindergarten & grade 1 made baked goods and raised $100. For Haiti
- 2nd and 3rd grade ran a food drive for the Scituate Food Pantry
- 4th and 5th interviewed elders from our church in their homes
- 6th, 7th and 8th ran our some coffee hours and helped the younger grades.
- All grades raised money and put kits together for Haiti as did our Teen and youth nights.
Children in 9th grade may chose to get confirmed. They stay in worship service and then have a confirmation class after church on chosen Sundays. 10th grade and up have the choice of helping in any class or enjoying the worship service. Community service hours is given to helpers in Nursery care.
Teens have a special place in our church. We sponsor a teen night once a month. This year we are expecting the program to grow with many new volunteers. Many teens also participate in the church choirs and other music programs. Last year our older teens ran the Joy Singers, a chorus program for pre k up to grade 3. They preformed on several different Sundays to the enjoyment of the entire congregation.
Teachers are the foundation for all of our programs. Most find that the experience of teaching greatly enhances their Christian belief. If you have an interest in teaching, please contact Ann Gerhard.
Helping young people to better understand the role of God in their lives is critical to our mission. However, often we need more than just the time on Sunday mornings. So, we have found a number of web-sites that provide material that you might find useful in working with your children:
